The fluorescence is due to hydrocarbon impurities incorporated within the crystal lattice of the FLUORITE during formation of the crystals and not to other elements as is the case with the vast majority of fluorescent minerals. A large pocket was discovered in November 2006 and specimens were acquired by me in January 2007. See the Dec. 2007 MINERALOGICAL RECORD vol.38, number 6 pages 478 & 479 for a discussion regarding this unique find. These are the finest Fluorite specimens to come from this location in over 50 years of mining!! These fine FLUORITES were photographed under a 50watt longwave but are equally fluorescent under short wave UV. The phosphorescence is remarkable under shortwave UV, lasting several minutes (with a dark adapted eye) and noteworthy under longwave UV.
